With a magnitude of 8.9 it was 7th most powerful earthquake on record and the strongest in Japan ever. Even the Great Kanto Earthquake, which destroyed large parts of Tokyo in 1923 and killed more than 100.000 people was less powerful (7.9 on the Richter scale).
